I didn’t know if I would be adding campground reviews to The Wandering Chickadee blog. However, after we kicked off our 2024 camping season at Moose Creek RV Resort in Greenville, Maine, and had an amazing experience…it was an easy decision to make about including it here.
To help understand our perspective a bit more, we travel with a Venture Sonic 211VDB. It’s a 27-foot travel trailer that we tow with our Ford 150. I grew up camping in the traditional way..in a tent; my husband grew up boating. You can see how it was an easy decision to land on purchasing a travel trailer.
We are relatively new to the RV world and have much to learn and I plan to share it all. All the good stuff…along with the rookie mistakes! Because..we make a ton of those!
I will be sharing campground reviews periodically on The Wandering Chickadee as part of what I am now calling the Campground Series. You will be able to find all the reviews in the Series section of the website.
These campground reviews are going to be a little different than my typical activity and adventure recaps where I am going to give you the following:
- General Information of the Campground
- Cleanliness of Sites/Site Details
- Site Costs
- Amenities
- Bathroom Low Down
- Quick Overview of our Experience
If you think there is something I should add, takeaway, or do differently, I welcome your feedback in the comments!
General Information:
Moose Creek RV Resort is located in Greenville, Maine and is about a 3 hour drive from Portland and is a newer campground (opened in 2022) and is loaded with amenities!
Moose Creek is a large campground (see campground map) with 131 full hook-up sites divided in premium, standard and pull through. The main difference between the premium v. standard and pull-through sites being that premium sites have a bit more wooded coverage than the others…for now.
Lots of trees have been planted around the standard and pull-through sites so I anticipate in 5 years, those sites, too, will have shade provided by these trees.
Also, this is going to eventually be a pretty big resort. They are currently working on an expansion of the resort with an additional expansion planned for the future.
Sometimes when I think of a bigger campground, I think that customer service could be so-so. This was NOT the case at Moose Creek. Staff are incredibly kind and helpful. From the women who checked us and office/store staff to the housekeeping team, you could definitely pick up on the vibe that everyone appeared to enjoy working there.
Tent camping is welcomed at the Resort with a one tent per site rule.
Quiet hours are 11pm-8am. While I prefer more of a 10pm-7am quiet hour (it’s so hard to keep an early riser quiet for that long), we had no issues with noise.
Now, let’s talk about the campground lay out. Moose Creek NAILED IT! With their one way roads within the campground, angled sites making backing in a camper a breeze, and separate arrival and departure driveways when towing your RV…it was dreamy.
If you are a walker like me, I love to get up early in the morning and get a couple of miles in, do some stretching, and read a book before my family wakes up. At Moose Creek, I did not need to leave the campground to get my miles in. You can easily do a 2 mile loop around it.
Finally, the pool. The heated pool was a HIT with our daughter and I loved the loungers, umbrellas, on-site bathroom facilities, and early 2000s music that brought me back to high school. It definitely gave us a camping club-med vibe…and we weren’t sad about that at all!
Cleanliness of Site/Site Details:
We reserved a premium site and were given site #122 and LOVED IT! Check out the campground map to see where we stayed. The site was impeccable, clean and VERY level. The site had crushed stone with mulch landscaping and a standard-size picnic table. And while we had a premium location, these details are also true for the standard and pull-through sites with the exception of grass separating the campsites versus woods.
Premium sites were slightly bigger, in my opinion, and our neighbors a bit more far away than the other sites.
For the campfires at each site, they had these amazing fire pits which was a great feature.
Also, each campsite number and W/E/S hook-up area lit up at night. I think this would be especially helpful for anyone arriving after dark.
Site Costs:
We stayed at a premium site for $85/night.
Standard and Pull-Through sites run about $10 cheaper per night. This rate appears to be the standard weekend rate for Moose Creek all season long with weekday stays being slightly cheaper.
You do have the option to “lock in” your campsite for an additional $10/night through their reservation system.
If you are booking a standard or pull through site, all the sites are relatively the same and if you are NOT staying in a group, I would recommend PASSING on the “lock in” fee.
For the premium sites, now that we have been here, I might “lock in” our campsite for next year. Why? There are a couple of sites I would prefer NOT to be at.
Which ones?
Sites #114-115 are near a drainage culvert that drained into some wetland-type land (aka bug heaven) and sites #126-128 are set up on a bit of a small slope. Sites #126-128 are level once you get over the slope but…given our newness to the RV life, I would prefer an easy and flat back in.
Amenities:
- Heated Pool and Pavilion: The pool area includes loungers, umbrellas, and sex-separated bathrooms. The pavilion space has a small restaurant and bar, and gas fireplaces. They regularly have live music on the weekends. This little hang out area is DREAMY.
- Playground
- Dedicated Dog Park
- Wireless Internet…that actually works
- On-site Trout Pond: The stocked trout pond is open for catch-and-release with barbless hooks and no fishing permit required. They also have kayaks, canoes, and paddle boats available to take out onto the pond.
- Laundry
- Dedicated Bathrooms and Showers within the Campground (more on that later)
- Golf Cart Rentals: Rentals cost $70/day and you add this to your reservation when you make it.
Bathroom Low Down:
The bathroom facilities were immaculate, very clean, and free! I got to meet the housekeeping staff on my early morning walks. Such kind people!
The bathrooms are located towards the back of the campground and in the section where most of the standard and pull-through sites are. It’s a bit of a walk from the site we stayed at, which is a non-issue if you have a golf cart. The bathroom facility consists of 6 private shower/toilet rooms. In the private spaces, there are hooks and benches to hang your clothes and plenty of counter space to lay out your toiletries.
We have a very small shower in our camper with less than great water pressure so I like to take advantage of showering at the campground facilities whenever possible. The shower was very clean, the water pressure was solid, and water was HOT.
Bathroom Rating: A-
The only reason I couldn’t give it an A+ was because it was a bit of a walk from the premium sites. We didn’t rent a golf cart so I drove our truck up there when I showered.
Overview of our Experience:
We arrived on Friday of Memorial Day Weekend. Thanks to my wrongly inputted check-in time on my calendar, we arrived about 45 minutes before check-in but were not charged the $10 that has been stated in the campground policy for early arrivers.
Moose Creek has a great arrival system where you are able to quickly check-in as they have a team of staff waiting at a concierge-like lectern right when you pull into the campground.
An amazing thing we noticed right away was the sheer number of Venture RVs, the same brand as our travel trailer. It’s not a brand that you see all the time, and we love it! So to stumble across 15 Venture RVs at this campground was pretty neat! It was like a Venture RV Convention!
The angled and LEVELED campsite made for easy backing in and setting up. We, however, positioned our camper too far from the sewer hook ups and didn’t realize it until 45 minutes into setting up so getting set up took extra long for us. #rookiemistake
After the set up was finished, we gave into our daughter’s request to go swimming in the heated pool on a 65 degree day. While I wasn’t thrilled with the idea of having to get wet on a not so warm day, my daughter did decide she could independently swim that afternoon and has been a fish ever since… so…I can’t be too mad, right?!
Friday night was exceptionally cold and we got to test out the new space heater, which I like much better than the heating system of our camper.
On Saturday, we headed into town to check out the fire tower and Game Warden’s cabin at the Welcome Center and headed out to Lily Bay State Park to do some of the walking trails there.
I feel like the trails were a bit of a bust. We realized the trails didn’t really make a loop and weren’t sure our daughter was up for a 4 mile hike so we decided that my daughter and I would hike for 2 miles and meet my husband at the beach on Moosehead Lake. That was do-able for her and thanks to the wind that weekend, the bugs on the trail were no-issue.
After our hike, we returned to our campsite and spent the rest of the afternoon swimming and lounging poolside.
Sunday, we tried two different ways to get to the B-52 Memorial Site but due to the spring storms both roads in were closed. Being on the Lily Bay side of Mooshead, we weren’t up for making the trek to the Kineo side so we explored downtown Greenville and then headed back to the campground for more pool time and grabbed lunch at the Pavilion.
Monday was departure day and we had to do that in the rain. Thankfully, my husband and I are getting into a pretty good groove with each of our departure responsibilities so we got packed up relatively quickly.
As we headed back home, we even managed to see a moose at the popular moose spotting spot at the DOT site in Shirley!
Key Takeaways:
- Campsites were impeccable! Clean, level, and the premium sites offered, to us, the perfect amount of privacy from our neighbors.
- The heated pool and pavilion were great spots to hang out at with a kiddo in tow.
- The showers and laundry were a bit of a trek from our site. That’s a non-issue if you rent a golf cart or don’t mind taking your truck.
